Aids for glasses

They are supplementary benefits of MUFACE for expenses in glasses, lenses and other optical aids incurred by mutual society members and beneficiaries

MUFACE MUFACE oversees the provision of optical benefits to its members and their beneficiaries for glasses, contact lenses, optical aids for low vision and prism aids for severe ocular motility disturbances, among others.

It is a supplementary healthcare benefit governed by Order APU/2245/2005 of 30 June and Resolution of 26 June 2014 of the General State Civil Servants Mutual Society, which modifies Annexes II, III and IV of Order APU/2245/2005 of 30 June, that consists in economic benefits based on a scale to pay the expenses of certain lenses and optical aids listed in Annex III.

Access limitation and conditions

The conditions to access this benefit follow:

  • In the case of glasses and the replacement of the lenses, one pair of glasses or the replacement of a maximum of two lenses per beneficiary and calendar year will be provided.

  • In the case of contact lenses, a maximum of two contact lenses per beneficiary and calendar year will be provided. The maximum aid for this purpose in disposable contact lenses is 30 euros per calendar year and beneficiary, and it must be requested in a single time. The aids for contact lenses and disposable contact lenses are incompatible, even if the maximum amounts/units financed per calendar year is not exceeded. Therapeutic lenses are not governed by these limitations.

  • In the case of therapeutic lenses, a report from the specialist in ophthalmology with the diagnosis and prescription will be required every time that the aid is requested.

  • Beneficiaries that have a visual acuity equal or lower than 0.3 (3/10) with a correction in the best eye or a field of vision below 10º from the point of fixation can access these optical aids for low vision. The first application for this benefit requires a report from the specialist in ophthalmology that details the visual acuity and, where applicable, the field of vision. A maximum of 360 euros per calendar year and beneficiary will be granted.

  • In the case of prism aids, a report from the specialist in ophthalmology with the diagnosis and prescription will be required every time that the aid is requested. A maximum of 160 euros per calendar year and beneficiary will be granted.

  • An original invoice from the opticians or the establishment authorised for this purpose by the competent health authority must be provided for all benefits in order to guarantee that the personalised adaption to the patient has been carried out. However, the invoice for therapeutic lenses can be issued by the specialist in ophthalmology.

  • The invoice must fulfil all the legal and regulatory requirements for it to be valid, and it must include the items and prices in detail, as well as the proof of payment or, otherwise, be accompanied by the corresponding receipt that justifies this payment.

  • To calculate the total of granted benefits and allocation to the year in question, the corresponding invoice's date will be taken into consideration.
