What is the difference between contents and buildings in home insurance?

When it comes to home insurance, it is important to understand the terms or concepts used to describe what is included in the insurance policy. Two important concepts in home insurance are "contents" and "buildings". Below, we detail the differences between both:

What is meant by Buildings?

The term "building" refers to the physical structure of the home and its permanent elements:

  • Structure of the property: walls, ceilings, floors and foundations.

  • Fixed installations: plumbing, electricity, heating system and air conditioning.

  • Integrated elements: doors, windows and security elements, such as alarms.

What is meant by Contents?

"Contents" refers to all the property inside the home and its attached elements that is not permanently fixed thereto:

  • Furniture and household appliances: tables, chairs, refrigerators, TVs, etc.

  • Clothing and personal effects: clothes, jewellery, valuables, etc.

  • Utensils and equipment: tools, sports equipment, decorative elements.

In short, the building is made up of the elements that, structurally, form part of the property (walls, etc.) and the contents, on the other hand, are what is found inside the building (personal goods, such as clothing or footwear, household appliances, jewellery, etc.)
