The DKV Medicine and Solidarity Awards pay tribute to people and public limited companies in the healthcare sector who, as well as carrying out their professional work, also support or encourage solidarity projects - thus helping to change our society.
Winners of the 7th edition
The África Directo Foundation, Dr Ignacio Díaz de Tuesta Revilla and Hospital San Juan de Dios del Aljarafe are the winners of the 7th edition of these DKV Medicine and Solidarity Awards, which took place on Tuesday 23 November at Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid.
The África Directo Foundation won the Solidarity Organization Award category for a project that improves protective measures against COVID-19 infection. This project involves the manufacture of personal protective equipment and non-invasive ventilators based on diving masks and adapted by a team of Spanish doctors and engineers. These were tested successfully in Spain and used in centres in Africa and Central America, which lack any anti-COVID-19 protection material.
Dr Ignacio Díaz de Tuesta Revilla collected the Solidarity Healthcare Professional Award for the Andalucía Respira project, an initiative by health professionals that consisted in designing, in record-breaking time, a respirator for prolonged use in the ICU by COVID patients. The respirator had to be manufactured easily and quickly with industrial materials accessible to countries without an industry capable of manufacturing respirators.
Hospital San Juan De Dios del Aljarafe in Seville received the Solidarity Digital Health Initiative Award for the programme "Tele-Covid: humanizando y optimizando la asistencia en tiempos de pandemia”. This hospital decided to offer home treatment to patients who did not require specific hospital treatment and felt lonely and distressed due to COVID.
